Volleyhawks Take Series Opener With Sweep

WILMINGTON, N.C. – UNCW swept visiting Elon, 25-16, 25-23, 29-27, behind a balanced offense of four players with seven or more kills on Friday in Coastal Athletic Association volleyball play at Hanover Hall.

The Seahawks (11-11) pushed their record to 5-4 in the league and remain tied for fourth. The Phoenix, though, dipped to 6-5 with the loss and 9-12 overall.

Leading the Seahawks were Sam Vanda and Elaina Murphy with nine kills apiece, while Gaby Zovko and Nadia Wasilewski added eight and seven, respectively. Zovko and Wasilewski combined to hit .625 on the match and did not commit a hitting error.

UNCW finished with a .360 hitting average, second highest of the season.

The Seahawks owned the net, finishing with a 9-4 advantage in blocks. Courtney Graham, who also had four aces and five kills, paced the way with five and Wasilewski added four.

Elon's Cameron Lanier held match-high honors with 12 kills, and Allie Schultz had nine.

The Seahawks held Elon in check in the first set, limiting it to -.143 hitting.

In the second set, the Seahawks grabbed their first lead of the set after an Elon hitting error gave UNCW a 21-20 lead. That lead grew to 23-20 following a kill by Zovko.

In the final set, a kill from Murphy and a block by Graham and Zovko gave the Seahawks a 29-27 set and match win.

The series concludes on Saturday at 2 p.m.
