Seahawks Fend Off Huskies In CAA Opening Win

WILMINGTON, N.C. – Paige Smith led five Seahawks in double-digits with a team-high 15 points as UNCW earned a 69-67 win over Northeastern in the Coastal Athletic Association opener for both programs on Friday at Trask Coliseum.

The Seahawks pushed their record to 5-7 with their second straight win while the Huskies bowed to 4-7 with the road loss.

Joining Smith with double-figure points were Torin Rogers and Kylah Silver with 12 apiece and Rori Cox and Icyss Storm both had 11.

Justice Tramble led all scorers with 18 points and Taylor Holohan chipped in 12.

UNCW held a 61-52 lead entering the four quarter and had to fend off the Huskies for the win. Smith knocked down a pair of jumpers to expand the lead to 65-54, but NU rallied and cut the deficit to two, 69-67, but was held scoreless the final 49 seconds.

Cox finished with eight steals and doled out a team high four assists.

Rogers grabbed a game-high seven rebounds.

Between nine points apiece from Storm and Smith, the Seahawks carried a 40-36 lead into the intermission.
