Volleyhawks Tripped By Mercer, 3-0

STATESBORO, Ga. – UNCW came up short on Saturday with a 3-0 (29-27, 25-18, 28-26) loss to Mercer at the Eagles Invitational, hosted by Georgia Southern, at the Hanners Fieldhouse.

The Seahawks fell to 0-5 to open the season while the Bears improved to 1-5 with their first win of the season.

Several Seahawks held match-high honors. Hanna Forbes led with 15 kills while Olivia Heidel handed out 27 assists. Marnie Ursem had seven kills and six total blocks.

Defensively, Coley Shiflet averaged 6.67 digs per set, and Avery Markham added 12 for UNCW.

Aubri Martin posted a match-best 24 digs for the Bears, who hit .241, led by Avery Wilks (.438) and Joselynn Sanjurjo (.625).

The Seahawks held a 24-22 lead in the third set, but Mercer held off set point with a kill and tied the set on a kill by Sanjuro. UNCW grabbed a 26-25 advantage off a kill from Ursem, but Mercer closed out the match with a 3-0 run.

The Seahawks wrap up their tournament on Sunday against Pacific University at 10 a.m.
