UNCW Rallies for 3-3 Tie at #1 Wake Forest

WINSTON-SALEM, North Carolina – Sophomore Christian Acevedo's game-tying penalty kick goal in the 90th minute pushed the UNCW men's soccer team to a 3-3 tie at No. 1 ranked Wake Forest on Tuesday night at Spry Stadium.

UNCW stands 1-2-2 after its first match at Wake Forest since 2009. The Demon Deacons remain unbeaten at 5-0-2.

Acevedo's penalty kick conversion with 43 seconds to go capped a two-goal second-half comeback after Wake took a 3-1 lead with 34 minutes to go. UNCW has overcome a two-goal deficit for the second straight season.

The comeback charge began with Bryan Miralrio's short-range shot through the right post on a pass by Gavin Carmichael in the 71st minute.

Osei Gyamfi, the reigning Coastal Athletic Association Co-Offensive Player of the Week, started the high-scoring night with a goal for the second straight game, 43 seconds into the match, on a deflected shot by Ethan Newsome.

Roughly 12 minutes later, Wake equalized on a Tate Lorentz score on an assist by Basit Umar and Amoni Thomas.

With the game tied 1-1 at halftime, a UNCW foul was assessed inside the box in the 53rd minute to set up a Lorentz penalty kick goal and brace.

The Demon Deacons added an insurance marker in the 66th minute with a Jeffrey White goal assisted by Lorentz and Thomas before the Seahawks' comeback.

UNCW played the top-ranked team in the country for the first time since its 3-2 upset win over then-top-ranked UNC Greensboro on Nov. 3, 2004 and remains unbeaten in such games after Tuesday.

The Seahawks resume CAA play vs. Charleston on Saturday at 7 p.m.
