Blue Hens Rally Past Seahawks, 6-5

WILMINGTON, North Carolina – Delaware's Sydney Shaffer's sixth-inning solo home run lifted the Blue Hens to a 6-5 series-clinching win over UNCW to close out the three-game Coastal Athletic Association softball set at Boseman Field on Sunday afternoon.

The Blue Hens upped their overall record to 22-13 with an 11-4 CAA mark. The Seahawks dropped to 8-7 in the conference and stand 22-15 overall.

The offensive game featured 20 hits and three home runs, including Shaffer's go-ahead shot. UNCW's Morgan Britt started the scoring with a two-run home run in the first inning before Delaware two-way player Morgan Hess (5-4) launched a round-tripper in the top of the second.

The Seahawks erased a slim 3-2 deficit in the bottom of the fourth with a three-run frame on five straight hits. Senior Mackenzie Amodeo lined a two-run single to left field and pinch hitter Lauryn Richardson followed with a single to score Amodeo, who advanced to third on a throwing error on the previous play, and take a 5-3 lead.

Delaware evened the game in the top of the fifth before Shaffer completed the comeback an inning later.

Makayla Huddleston (11-7) tossed the final 3.1 innings for the Seahawks.

UNCW travels to Long Island for a three-game set at Hofstra from Apr. 11-13.
