WILMINGTON, N.C. – College of Charleston claimed the last three matches to edge UNCW women's tennis, 4-3, in a Coastal Athletic Association battle on Saturday afternoon at UNCW Courts.
The Seahawks fell to 5-6 and 3-2 in the CAA, while the Cougars improved to 11-7 overall and 3-2 in the conference. Charleston claimed the deciding match in No. 6 singles, 7-6 (7-5), 3-6, 6-4 in over two hours of action.
UNCW started the match strong by claiming the doubles point. Lucia Gomez and Anna Parker Shumate cruised to a 6-1 win in No. 3 doubles against McKenzie Daniel and Jaiden McKee. Eda Arli and Elif Albayrak earned their second straight win in No. 1 doubles, breezing past Francesca Salvato and Sia Cariov, 6-1, with Albayrak clinching the point on an ace right before the match on court two concluded.
In No. 2 singles, Stela Joksimovic earned her fifth consecutive victory, defeating Salvato 6-1, 6-4 to put the Seahawks ahead, 2-1.
Albayrak gave UNCW a 3-1 cushion, earning her sixth win of the season and her fifth in No. 4 singles, 6-2, 7-5 over Cariov.
