Seahawks Soar Past Tribe in CAA Opener

WILMINGTON, N.C. – UNCW men's tennis swept all six singles matches in its Coastal Athletic Association opener en route to a 6-1 victory against William & Mary at UNCW Courts on Saturday afternoon.

The Seahawks improved to 4-7 on the season and 1-0 in the league, while the Tribe fell to 3-7 overall and dipped to 1-2 in the conference.

In singles competition, Alex de Gabriele was the first Seahawk to finish his match, winning both sets 6-2, 6-2 against Raz Katz in No. 6 singles for his first win of the season.

Sam Nicholson earned his fourth win of the season with a dominant performance on court two. The senior posted a double bagel, 6-0, 6-0 in No. 2 singles against Nikita Bortnichek to give the Seahawks a 2-1 lead. 

Jordi Domenech earned his first victory of 2025, extending the Seahawks lead to 3-1 with a 6-2, 6-0 win in No. 5 singles.

Lukas Steffen clinched the match for UNCW with a 7-5, 6-1 win on court four, improving to 6-4 on the season. 

Harold Huens battled adversity in no. 1 singles to earn his fifth win of the season. Huens led 4-0 early in the first and held on to take the set 7-6, winning the tiebreaker 7-1. Huens roared past Gur Trakhtenberg in the second set, 6-3.

In No. 3 singles, Joseph Wayand prevailed in three sets against Albert Hansen, improving to 7-3 on the year. Wayand captured the first set 6-1, but Hansen rallied to take the second set 6-3. Wayand punctuated the Seahawks' singles sweep with a 6-0 victory in the third set.

Wayand and Domenech recorded their second win of season in No. 1 doubles, defeating Bortnichek and Katz, 6-3.

The Seahawks remain at home for a match against NJIT (9-2) on Thursday at 2 p.m.
