WASHINGTON, D.C. – The No. 2 seed UNCW men's basketball team registered a season-high 12 steals, none bigger than Nolan Hodge's swipe with six seconds remaining, to send the Seahawks to the 2025 Jersey Mike's Coastal Athletic Association Championship Game with a narrow 68-67 victory over No. 3 seed Charleston on Monday night at the CareFirst Arena.
The Seahawks (26-7) advanced to the CAA Finals for a league record 14th time and third time in the last four seasons, where they will play No. 12 seed Delaware on Tuesday night at 7 p.m.
UNCW's Donovan Newby scored a game-high 24 points while Khamari McGriff contributed 10.
The Cougars dipped to 24-9 behind four players in double figures: Derrin Boyd (18), CJ Fulton (12), Ante Brzovic (11) and Deywilk Tavarez (11).
In a game that featured 14 lead changes and 9 ties, it was the Seahawks who prevailed with multiple late defensive stands in the final minute to hold off a resilient Cougars team, who rallied from a 40-30 halftime deficit to make it a back-and-forth single possession game with under eight minutes to go.
Trailing 64-61 with 2:08 to go, the Seahawks flipped the lead to 66-64 with five points by Newby with 1:12 left in the game.
Charleston had a chance to tie or win the game with seconds left when Hodge picked Boyd near the top of the key and passed to Bo Montgomery, who was fouled and converted both shots at the line. Tavarez drained a three as time expired for the 68-67 final.
