CONWAY, S.C. – Strong performances in singles competition propelled UNCW men's tennis to victory against Coastal Carolina, 4-3, at Stevens Tennis Complex on Friday. Seniors Harold Huens, Sam Nicholson, and Joseph Wayand claimed straight-set victories from the top three positions, and junior Lukas Steffen earned a straight-set win in No. 5 singles for the Seahawks.
UNCW improved to 2-1 on the season, while the Chanticleers fell to 0-2.
"Hats of to Coastal today. They are very strong on their courts and really came after us in the doubles," Head Coach Mait DuBois said. "We responded well in the singles and very proud of four of our guys who put up very decisive singles victories. It's always great to get a road win. Good experience for our guys and we will take it moving forward."
Huens, the reigning Coastal Athletic Association Player of the Year, cruised to victory in No. 1 singles over Juan Cruz Collardin, 6-1, 6-2. Huens improved to 2-0 in singles competition on the season.
Nicholson won his second straight match and controlled the action early in No. 2 singles, winning both sets 6-2 against Curzio Manucci.
Wayand, the reigning CAA Player of the Week, remained unbeaten in singles competition, improving his record to 3-0 in No. 3 singles with a 6-4, 6-3 victory against Jack Dixon to clinch the match for the Seahawks.
Steffen earned his second win of the season in No. 5 singles convincingly against Eric Tripathi, 6-3, 6-1.
Coastal Carolina claimed the doubles point to begin the afternoon, winning the third match, 6-2, and the top match, 7-5. Wayand and Alex de Gabriele held a 6-5 lead in their match before it ended unfinished.
