UNCW's Historic Season Ends in Penalty Shootout

WILMINGTON, N.C. – Top-seeded UNCW and No. 3 seed Elon played to a scoreless draw in the 2025 Coastal Athletic Association Women's Soccer Semifinals on Sunday at UNCW Soccer Stadium, but Elon advanced via penalty kicks 6–5 following two overtime periods.

UNCW, the 2025 CAA South Division Champions, ended the season 11-3-4 overall while Elon's record moved to 11-2-6 on the year. Elon will meet Stony Brook in the championship match on either Saturday, Nov. 8, or Sunday, Nov. 9.

Each team made its first five penalty kicks during the all-or-nothing penalty kick shootout. Isabella DiPrima stepped up next for Elon and converted, giving the Phoenix a 6-5 lead and an eventual spot in the championship match.

It was the first time since 2013 that a CAA semifinal match was decided on penalty kicks.

Both teams combined to tally 42 total shots and had several prime scoring opportunities in both halves.

The Seahawks outshot Elon 24-18 in the match, including a 12-6 edge in shots on target.

Each team also had one shot attempt that hit the woodwork during the 110-minute battle.

Elon's goalkeeper Katie Bisgrove, a third-team All-CAA selection, made a career-high 12 saves in the contest, including seven in the first half.

UNCW goalkeeper Morgan Hobbs, a second-team All-CAA selection, matched her career-high with six saves.

With the draw, the Seahawks finished the 2025 season with a .722 win percentage, surpassing the mark of .719 set in 2021 for the best single-season win percentage in program history.

The Seahawks stretched their unbeaten streak to 10 matches, tying the program record that was set during the 2004 campaign.
