Game Recap: Men's Basketball | | Brandon Sans

Seahawks Edge Cougars, 85-83

CHARLESTON, South Carolina – Four UNCW players reached double figures for the third straight game and UNCW shot 52.5 percent to earn a narrow 85-83 road win at Charleston in Coastal Athletic Association men's basketball action on Thursday night at TD Arena.

The Seahawks ran their win streak to three games and have won five of their last six games to improve to 15-5 and 5-2 in the league. The Cougars are also 15-5 and 5-2 after suffering their first home conference loss of the season.

UNCW's Bo Montgomery paced UNCW for the second straight game and third time this season with 18 points while Donovan Newby contributed 17 in 37 minutes of action. Graduate forward Sean Moore surpassed 1,000 career points with 15 markers while Khamari McGriff chipped in 12 points off the bench.

Charleston also had four players reach 10 or more points led by Derrin Boyd (24) along with AJ Smith (18), Ante Brzovic (16) and CJ Fulton (13).

UNCW hit 12 of their first 18 shots to build a 30-20 lead with 11:32 before halftime. Charleston immediately responded with a 9-0 spurt and then took a short lead three-and-a-half minutes later.
The Seahawks then outscored the Cougars 11-3 over the last five minutes to carry a 49-42 advantage into halftime.

A quick 6-2 spurt out of the break made it a game-high 11 point lead, 55-44, with 18:05 on the clock, but Charleston pulled within single digits the rest of the way.

The Cougars pulled with a single possession seven different times in the second half, but the sure-handed Seahawks responded every time, including defending a potential game-winning three-pointer by Boyd with two seconds left that was off the mark as time expires.

UNCW next returns home on Saturday vs. Hampton at 7 p.m.
