ATHENS, Georgia – Charlotte's Arianna Rodi hit a two-run home run in the third inning to help hand the UNCW softball team a 5-0 setback in the NCAA Athens Regional on Saturday afternoon at Jack Turner Stadium.
The 49ers (39-17) will play another elimination game vs. No. 11 Georgia later Saturday. The Seahawks (33-23) conclude their second NCAA Tournament appearance in three seasons.
Charlotte senior Georgeanna Barefoot (14-2) worked six scoreless innings while freshman Kadie Becker retired UNCW in order in the seventh.
Junior Kara Hammock (17-6) recorded five strikeouts in five innings of work.
Senior Tayler Vitola along with freshmen Allison Corbin and Peyton Carver notched singles for UNCW.
49ers left fielder Abigail Knight laid down a bunt single with one out in third and Rodi, who had three RBI in the game, then sent the first pitch of her at-bat out to left-center for her 22nd home run of the season.
Charlotte added three runs in the sixth with five of the first six batters in the frame reaching base.
Freshman Peyton Eckert worked two scoreless innings of relief in her second appearance of the weekend.Â
