Blue Hens Edge Seahawks In 10 Innings

NEWARK, Del. – Aiden Stewart's pinch-hit single in the bottom of the tenth inning lifted Delaware past UNCW, 8-7, in a conference series opener on Thursday at Bob Hannah Stadium.

The Blue Hens (28-23, 15-10 CAA) clinched a Coastal Athletic Association tournament berth with the win. The Seahawks, who will be one of the top two seeds in the tournament, fell to 35-18 overall and 19-6 in the league.

Chris Dengler led off the bottom of the 10th for the Blue Hens with a double inside the third base bag. He moved to third on a ground out to second. Stewart stepped to the plate and lined a single to right to score the winning run.

Dengler finished with two hits and knocked in two runs. Andrew Amato also plated two runs and Eric Ludman hit his 14th homer of the season to give UD a 7-6 lead in the fourth inning.

Reliever Anthony Gubitosi (2-1) earned the win with three innings of hitless relief.

Brock Wills had a pair of hits, including his second grand slam of the season. Kevin Jones and Jac Croom both added a pair of hits.
Wills' grand slam was the highlight of a six-run third inning as UNCW overcame a 6-0 deficit.

Luke Craig (4-1) took the loss for UNCW.

The series concludes with a doubleheader on Friday beginning at 4 p.m. Saturday's game was moved up due to expected inclement weather.
