Hammock Sends Seahawks to CAA Championship Game

WILMINGTON, North Carolina – Junior Kara Hammock tossed an electric 11-inning shutout on 159 pitches to send fourth-seeded UNCW to the Coastal Athletic Association Softball Championship Game with a 5-0 extra-inning victory over second-seeded Delaware on Friday at Boseman Field.

The Seahawks (32-20) and Blue Hens (39-13) played 10 scoreless innings before UNCW broke through with five runs in the 11th inning. UNCW will play for its second CAA title in three years vs. the winner of the elimination bracket (Campbell or Delaware) on Saturday at 2 p.m. (NEW TIME)

Hammock (16-5) and Delaware's Emily Winburn (22-7) battled through one of the best pitcher's duels in Boseman Field history and stranded a combined 23 runners on in the contest that lasted over three hours. Both pitchers were aided by multiple outstanding defensive efforts.

The dramatic 11th inning started with a Morgan Britt single followed by a Delaware throwing error on a Mary Sobataka batted ball to put both runners in scoring position. The Blue Hens then intentionally walked Allison Corbin to load the bases with no outs.

Freshman Madison Biddle then shot a 1-0 single to right field to score two runs with two on. A passed ball advanced Biddle and pinch-runner Holland Miller into scoring position. Two batters later, Jentri Meadows lined an RBI single up the middle to make it 3-0.

A Tayler Vitola groundout brought home another run and the Seahawks capped the frame with a fifth run on a passed ball.

Delaware loaded the bases with no outs in the bottom of the inning but the stoic Hammock induced a pair of pop-outs and a full-count strikeout to strand three runners and complete the win.

Hammock set career-highs in innings pitched and pitches thrown in the contest.
