PHILADELPHIA, Pa. – Drexel used a six-run first inning to turn back the UNCW softball team 7-6 and win the Coastal Athletic Association series on Sunday at the Drexel Softball Stadium.
The Dragons (15-27, 10-13 CAA) held off a late rally by the Seahawks (26-20, 15-9 CAA), who matched their season-high with 13 hits for the second straight day and third time in 2024.
Drexel's Lindsay Nelson (9-12) went the distance on her Senior Day for her second win of the weekend with three earned runs, three walks and a pair of strikeouts.
UNCW's Carrigan Ewers (2-7) allowed three runs, two earned, on two hits and a walk in the loss.
Five Seahawks registered two-hit games: Mackenzie Amodeo, Madison Biddle, Lauren Cope, Mary Sobataka and Tayler Vitola, who acheived her 17th multi-hit game this season.
A five-hit, six-run first inning by the Dragons erased an early 2-0 Seahawk lead courtesy of RBI singles by Allison Corbin and Cope. The first six Drexel batters reached base, including a Lily Meuninck double to start the bottom-half scoring.
Both teams added a run over the next three innings with a Skylar Stockton RBI fielder's choice for UNCW and a Hunt home run for Drexel to make it 7-3 after four innings.
The Seahawks cashed in a bases-loaded opportunity in the fifth inning for three runs, including two courtesy of a pair of Dragon errors on an Amodeo batted ball to third base, to trim the gap to 7-6.
Nelson, however, was able to strand 12Â Seahawks on base throughout the day, including two in scoring position in the top of the seventh to earn the win in her final home appearance at Drexel.
The Seahawks, who have clinched a spot in the CAA Tournament, will host Monmouth in the regular season finale at Boseman Field from May 2-4.
