Big First Inning Downs Seahawks

WILMINGTON, North Carolina – The UNCW softball team dropped a 7-0 decision to Coastal Carolina on Wednesday evening at Boseman Field.

The Chanticleers improved to 13-6 overall while the Seahawks stand an even 9-9 ahead of Coastal Athletic Association play this weekend at Hampton.

Coastal right-hander Raelee Brabham (9-2) recorded her third complete game and first shutout of 2024.

UNCW righty Carrigan Ewers (2-4) took the loss in three innings of work.

The Chants' Riley Zana and Iyanla De Jesus combined for five hits and five RBI, with De Jesus, who hit a third-inning home run, finishing a triple shy of the cycle.

The first three batters of the UNCW order – Tayler Vitola, Skylar Stockton and Mary Sobataka – each recorded hits. Sobataka extended her reached base streak to 11 games on a seventh-inning single.

Coastal broke the game open with four runs in the first inning to maintain control throughout the contest.

The Seahawks open a three-game CAA series at the Pirates on Friday with one game being played each day until Sunday.
