Hammock, Winstead Post Shutouts in CAA Sweep

HAMPTON, Virginia – UNCW's Kara Hammock and Emily Winstead held Hampton to three hits over two shutout games as the Seahawks completed a Coastal Athletic Association sweep on Sunday at the Lady Pirates Softball Stadium.

The Seahawks (12-9, 3-0 CAA) claimed both games of a doubleheader with indentical 5-0 results against the Lady Pirates (5-16, 0-3 CAA).

Outfielder Skylar Stockton collected four of UNCW's 14 combined hits on Sunday, drove in three and scored three runs as well.

The Seahawks, who limited Hampton to one run in the weekend, host Elon next weekend for a three-game series at Boseman Field starting on Friday at 6 p.m.

GAME 1 | UNCW 5, Hampton 0
UNCW's Tayler Vitola and Skylar Stockton combined for three hits, including Stockton's first home run of the season, four runs and each walked to lead UNCW to a 5-0 victory in Game 1.

Junior Lauren Cope notched her first-career three-hit came while Winstead (4-1) became the sixth Seahawk to surpass 300 career strikeouts with seven in her second complete game of the season.

UNCW recorded half of its eight hits in the first inning started by Vitola, who singled, stole second, reached third on a throwing error and scored on a passed ball as Stockton worked a walk. The Seahawks scored two more times in the first with runs driven in by graduate students Mary Sobataka and Morgan Britt.

Stockton made it 4-0 in the second inning with a round-tripper over the left field fence and drove in her second run of the ballgame in the sixth with a double that again scored Vitola.

Winstead scattered two hits and faced the same number of batters above the minimum. Hampton's Carmynn Bonner (0-1) took the loss in 1.1 innings.

GAME 2 | UNCW 5, Hampton 0
Hammock (6-3) carried a no-hitter into the bottom of the seventh as the Seahawk offense spotted her five runs in the top of the sixth to pick up the CAA sweep.

The Mechanicsville, Va., native traded scoreless frames with Hampton starter Emily Workman (1-7) for five innings before UNCW turned up the offense.

UNCW had five hits with Stockton, Carson Fleming and Peyton Carver each driving in runs.

Hammock did not surrender a hit through 6.1 phenomenal innings after which Hampton's Tayler Ivey singled up the middle to break up what would have been the 6-2 right-hander's first career no-hitter. She did, however, retire the next two batters to close out the weekend with two complete games.
