Hammock, Seahawks Open Season with Shutout Win

WILMINGTON, North Carolina – Junior Kara Hammock tossed her fourth career one-hitter in UNCW softball's 1-0 season-opening victory vs. Queens on Thursday night at Boseman Field.

The Seahawks begin the 2024 campaign at 1-0 to open the four-day home tournament. The Royals start the season with a 0-1 record in the first ever meeting between the two teams.

Hammock (1-0) fired seven shutout innings with seven strikeouts in her 19th career complete game. The 6-2 right-hander's retired the final 13 batter she faced and  her lone blemish was a Lindsey DeRoeck single to left field in the second inning.

Queens pitcher Autumn Courtney (0-1) also recorded a complete game in which she struck out nine and surrendered four hits along with a walk.

The Seahawks struck in the bottom of the second on back-to-back doubles by graduate students Morgan Britt and Mary Sobataka. With one out, Britt took an 0-2 pitch the opposite way before Sobataka launched an RBI double through the left-center gap to plate Britt and provide Hammock the only support she would need.

UNCW is back in action on Friday at 7:30 p.m. vs. DePaul. The game will be streamed on FloSoftball with live stats on UNCWStats.com.
