UNCW Takes Early Leads At CAA Championships

HAMPTON, Va. – Nic Newis and the women's 200 medley relay earned gold medals to lift UNCW to early leads in the men's and women's Coastal Athletic Association championship meet on Wednesday at the Hampton Aquaplex.

The Seahawk women lead Delaware by eight points while the men also lead the Blue Hens by three.

The 200 medley relay of Quinn Bike, Gil Shaw, Cameron Snowden and Emily Waite set a school record with a winning time of 1:38.89. The championship was the first for the program in the event since the 2012 championships.

Newis earned his second CAA championship in the 1-meter board with a score of 319.20 points and Ethan Badrian, the defending conference champion, was second with a score of 313.50. UNCW has won the event in each of the last five championships.

The women's 800 freestyle relay of Waite, Sarah Rogillio, Sophia Landeryou and Maura Schoppa finished second posting a time of 7:19.86.
UNCW also finished second in the men's 800 freestyle relay when Jacob Duracinsky, Will Goldey, William Carrico and Kenneth Lowe fashioned a time of 6:25.52.

Day two of the championships begins at 11 a.m. on Thursday with the swimming preliminaries. The diving preliminaries start at 12:30 p.m. and the swimming finals begin at 6 p.m.
