Seahawks Drop Twinbill at North Florida

JACKSONVILLE, Florida – The UNCW softball team opened their first road weekend with a pair of setbacks to host North Florida at the UNF Softball Complex on Friday afternoon.

The Ospreys (5-3) bested the Seahawks (3-4) in both games of a doubleheader by scores of 3-0 in Game 1 and a 2-1 verdict in eight innings in Game 2.

UNCW is scheduled to continue play on Saturday at Jacksonville University at 10 a.m.

GAME 1 | North Florida 3, UNCW 0
The Seahawks were held to two hits in the complete game shutout by Ospreys starter Halle Arends in the weekend opener.

UNCW starter Kara Hammock (1-1) pitched four innings, including two scoreless, before UNF tagged her for three runs on four hits over the third and fourth innings.

Ospreys center fielder Madisyn Federico went 2-for-3 with a two-run home run in the top of the third while designated player Allison Benning hit a solo run an inning later and also recorded a two-hit game.

UNCW's Skylar Stockton extended her reached base streak to six games with her sixth hit-by-pitch of the year in the top of the first.

GAME 2 | North Florida 2, UNCW 1 (8 innings)
UNCW was on the wrong end of a low-scoring pitchers duel against right-hander Emily Winstead and UNF's Benning.

Benning improved to 3-1 on the year with an eight-inning complete game, allowing no earned runs, while Winstead surrendered only one run through 6.1 innings.

The Seahawks took the first lead of the game in the third when Benning misplayed a Tayler Vitola sac bunt attempt to score freshman Ava Tsiouplis, who pinch ran after junior Lauryn Richardson started the frame with a single to left.

Winstead has retired six straight batters with one out in the bottom of the seventh when Culp followed a Jackson single with a double to tie the game. Senior Carrigan Ewers (1-1) stranded a runner on to end the threat but North Florida walked it off via the ghost runner in the eighth to sweep the twinbill.
