Furman Edges Seahawks, 3-1

WILMINGTON, North Carolina – Furman plated two runs in the sixth inning to edge UNCW 3-1 in softball action at Boseman Field on Saturday night.

The Paladins (4-0) handed the Seahawks (2-1) their first loss of the season after UNCW won games on Thursday and Friday. The two teams are scheduled to meet again on Sunday in the second of two straight contests for the Seahawks that begins with a 1:10 p.m. first pitch vs. North Dakota State.

Furman's Sierra Tufts (2-0) limited the Seahawks to four hits and three walks with four strikeouts in her complete game effort.

UNCW's Kara Hammock (1-1) was solid in the loss, allowing three runs on seven hits in 5.1 innings with three strikeouts. Freshman Peyton Eckert delivered 1.2 shutout relief innings in her collegiate debut.

Senior Tayler Vitola and junior Mackenzie Amodeo each collected two hits with Amodeo driving in Vitola in the first inning for the Seahawks' lone run.

The Paladins evened the game in the third inning and then took the lead in the top of the sixth. Singles by Sylvia Burroughs and Kiley Perry put two on and both advanced on a wild pitch. A sac-fly to right field by Hannah Poole scored one before a fielder's choice added an insurance run to seal the deal.
