WILMINGTON, N.C. – Taylor Henderson flirted with a triple-double with 18 points, 10 rebounds, and six assists and Evan Miller scored 15 points and reached 100 career three-pointers, but UNCW fell to Longwood 84-68 in the final non-conference game of the season in women's basketball action at Trask Coliseum on Sunday afternoon.Â
Henderson posted her first double-double of the season and tied her season-high in assists in the contest. Henderson, one of the nation's best in total free throw attempts on the season, finished the game shooting 8-of-10 from the foul line.Â
With 9:43 left in the second quarter, Miller achieved the milestone by knocking down a wide-open shot at the top of the key off a Tia Dobson assist. Miller was 6-of-13 from the field, including 3-of-5 from beyond the arc. Miller has made 101 three-pointers in her career and needs three more to tie for ninth all-time in program history. She ranks ninth in three-point field goals attempted.
Ali Zelaya also chipped in with 12 points and five rebounds and Isis Fitch scored seven off the bench in nine minutes of action.
Longwood jumped out to an early 13-5 lead in the first three and a half minutes of action, forcing UNCW to take an early timeout. The Lancers held a 20-13 after the opening quarter, but the Seahawks had a balanced attack with five different players scoring in the period.
UNCW battled back to cut the deficit to four early in the second quarter. The Seahawks kept the deficit to single digits until Longwood grabbed a 39-28 lead with 4:19 to play in the first half, prompting another Seahawks timeout. Longwood, one of the nation's best teams in steals per game and forcing turnovers, outscored UNCW 16-5 in points off turnovers in the first half, resulting in a 51-39 lead for the Lancers at the break. Longwood finished the game with 16 steals and a 32-23 edge in points off of turnovers.Â
Longwood went on a 12-4 run to begin the third quarter and held a commanding 71-48 lead heading into the fourth. UNCW continued to fight and opened the fourth quarter on a 6-0 run in the first 90 seconds, forcing Longwood to take a timeout. The Seahawks outscored Longwood 20-13 in the final quarter and held a 38-30 advantage in points in the paint for the game.
