Seahawks Drop CAA Home Opener

WILMINGTON, North Carolina – Northeastern used a 15-0 first quarter run to surge past UNCW, 79-49, in the Seahawks' Coastal Athletic Association women's basketball home opener on Friday night at Trask Coliseum.

The Huskies moved to 5-8 with a 1-2 CAA mark and return home to play Hofstra on Sunday. The Seahawks dipped to 2-12 with a 0-3 league record and host Drexel at Noon on Sunday.

Redshirt freshman Taylor Henderson (15) and senior Evan Miller (12) combined for 27 points for the Seahawks.

Northeastern fifth-year guard Jaelyn Batts' 17 points paced four Huskies in double figures. Senior forward Deja Bristol added 15 while senior guard Derin Erdogan contributed 12 points.  Reserve forward Oralye Kiefer equaled Erdogan's total.

An early Henderson jumper gave the Seahawks a brief 4-3 lead with 8:22 to go in the first period. The Huskies then scored 15 unanswered points, including six by Erdogan, to go up 18-4 with 4:46 left to play.

UNCW whittled the deficit to four, 22-18, on a pair of Kylah Silver layups to open the second period, but the Huskies responded with eight of the game's next 10 points to push their advantage back to double-digits, 30-20, and carried a 40-29 lead into halftime.
