Seahawks Clinch No. 2 Seed in CAA Championships

MOUNT PLEASANT, South Carolina – Graduate two-way star Janel Gamache limited Charleston to two hits in the circle and drove in a pair of runs to help UNCW close out the regular season with a 6-2 victory in Colonial Athletic Association softball action on Saturday afternoon at Patriots Point.

The Seahawks (23-25, 17-7 CAA), officially clinched the No. 2 seed in the CAA Championships next week in Hempstead, N.Y. The Cougars (19-31, 11-12 CAA) will be the No. 6 seed in the eight-team field.

Gamache (6-4) worked five innings while limiting Charleston to one run. The Exeter, R.I., product concluded the regular season with a league-low 1.50 ERA in 70.0 innings pitched while her .208 batting average against is third in the league.

Cougars right-hander Payton Lemire (6-17) was tagged for 11 hits and five runs in the loss.

Top-of-the-order hitters Tayler Vitola and Arial Pearce went a combined 7-for-8 with an RBI and run scored.

Both teams followed one run in the first innings with three scoreless innings until first baseman Logan Bjorson worked a four-pitch walk to start the top of the fifth.

UNCW then rattled off four straight singles, part of a 13-hit effort, that was capped by Gamache's two-run knock that made it 4-1 after Pearce recorded an RBI in the sequence.

Seniors Morgan Britt and Mary Sobataka each drove in back-to-back runs later in the fifth to go up 6-1 and give the Seahawks a five-run cushion it would not surrender.

UNCW, who recorded the most conference wins in program history, will begin its title defense next Thursday at 2:30 p.m. at Hofstra's Bill Edwards Stadium.
