No. 11 Duke Holds Off Seahawks In NCAA Tennis

DURHAM, North Carolina – No. 11 Duke lost the doubles point before rallying in singles to turn back UNCW, 4-2, in the first-round of the NCAA Men's Tennis Regionals on Saturday at Ambler Stadium.

The Seahawks, making their ninth appearance in the NCAA Regionals, finished the season with a 17-8 record. The Blue Devils, playing in the NCAA Tournament for the 30th time, improved to 21-6 and 4-0 lifetime against the Seahawks.

One of 16 hosts for first and second-round play, Duke is hosting a regional for the 15th time and owns a 26-3 record in home tournament matches over that span.

The pesky Seahawks got off to a quick start by claiming the doubles point with victories at No. 2 and No. 3 doubles. After splitting the first two matches off the court, UNCW secured the early point when the No. 3 tandem of  Gabe Hurtado and Bekhzod Rasamatov edged Duke's Faris Kha and Niroop Vallabhaneni, 7-6 (7-5), in a tie-breaker.

Duke evened the score at 1-all, however, with a win at No. 2 singles before UNCW Rasamatov put the Seahawks back in front, 2-1, by tripping up Duke's Connor Krug, 6-1, 6-2, at No. 4 singles.

The Blue Devils then swept the next three matches off the court at the No. 1, No. 3 and No. 6 positions to nail down the tournament win.

"Our guys played hard and I'm very proud of how we competed," said UNCW head coach Mait DuBois. "Duke is having an excellent year. Our team had opportunities today. This group got better and better as the year went on. It has truly been a pleasure coaching them."
