Tribe Tops Seahawks In CAA Championship Match

WILLIAMSBURG, Virginia – No. 1 seeded William & Mary captured its 28th Colonial Athletic Association Women's Tennis Championship with a 4-0 victory over sixth-seeded UNCW on Sunday at William & Mary's Mackesy Tennis Center at the Millie West Courts.
 
The Tribe hiked its record to 15-5 and won the conference title for the 28th time in 38 tries to earn the league's automatic berth to the NCAA Tournament. W&M stands a robust 69-9 since the conference adopted the current format in 1995.
 
The Seahawks, who defeated No. 11 Hofstra, No. 3 Charleston and No. 7 Drexel to reach the finals, closed out the season with a 13-9 record following a stirring run to their fourth championship appearance.
 
W&M claimed the doubles point with the deciding win at No. 2 doubles when the Tribe's Emma Fernald and Elisa Van Meeteren trimmed UNCW's Anna Daniels and Zoe Huffman, 6-4.
 
The Tribe then swept the first three singles matches off the court behind Sofiya Kuzina (No. 3), Hedda Gurholt (No. 1) and Ine Stange (No. 5) to successfully defend its title.
 
The Seahawks, who won five of their last seven matches, became just the second No. 6 seed in the history of the championship to advance to the finals.
