Game Recap: Men's Basketball | | Joe Browning

Tigers Rally Late To Edge Seahawks, 57-53

WILMINGTON, North Carolina – Towson closed out the game with a 19-2 run to rally past UNCW, 57-53, in a battle for third place in the Colonial Athletic Association men's basketball finale for both teams on Saturday night at Trask Coliseum.

The Tigers, 20-11 and 12-6 in the CAA, earned a split of their southern road swing and will be the No. 3 seed in next week's Jersey Mike's CAA Men's Basketball Championship in Washington, DC. The Seahawks, 22-9 and 12-6, will be the No. 4 seed.

The Seahawks, who have won six CAA titles, will tip at 2:30 p.m. on Sunday (Mar. 5) in a contest vs. either Drexel or the Hampton/Monmouth winner. The Seahawks won their lone meeting against Drexel and Hampton during the regular season and swept Monmouth. UNCW and Drexel have met four times in the championship, with the Dragons winning the last two in 2012 and 2020. UNCW won the 2003 CAA title against Drexel.

In Saturday's finale in Wilmington, redshirt senior guard Cam Holden was the catalyst in Towson's dramatic comeback, finishing with a double-double of 22 points and 11 rebounds. Graduate guard Nicolas Timberlake added 12 points and senior forward Charles Thompson had 11 points and eight boards.

Junior point guard Donovan Newby was the lone player in double figures with 13 points for the Seahawks, who shot 59.1 percent in the first half and 20.8 percent after the break. Senior forward Amari Kelly had 10 rebounds in his final home appearance.

"They deserved to win," said Takayo Siddle, UNCW's third-year head coach. "We had it right where we wanted it. They were ready to give in and we didn't capitalize.

"Our lack of offense late affected our defense. We know we let one slip away from us. This is one of the tougher losses that I've been a part of, especially since we had the game. Give Towson all the credit. They did a great job of sticking with it on a night when they didn't play well. They took advantage of the opportunity."

The Tigers trailed by 14 points early in the second half and were still behind, 51-38, when the bottom dropped out for UNCW. Timberlake started a string of six consecutive points with a pair of free throws and Thompson's bucket over Kelly with 4:09 left to play narrowed the deficit to 51-46.

After Trazarien White converted both ends of a bonus situation to get the lead back to 53-46 at the 3:55 mark, the versatile Holden took over. The Forsyth, Ga., product scored seven straight points, including a three-pointer with 1:59 remaining to knot the score at 53-all.

Timberlake then sank four consecutive free throws in the final 1:25 to complete the comeback for Towson, which held UNCW without a field goal in the final 11:12 of the contest. UNCW did not score in the last 3:55.

In the first half, Kelly got the Seahawks off to a strong start on Senior Night, scoring the first three buckets for the winners.

The Seahawks jumped ahead, 15-12, midway through the period when senior guard Shykeim Phillips kickstarted a 17-6 spurt with a driving layup at the 10:39 mark.

The margin swelled to 14 points on two occasions before the Seahawks took a 36-25 advantage into intermission. A jumper on the right elbow by White put the Seahawks on top, 34-20, with 2:47 remaining in the first half.
