Seahawks Blank Panthers In Men's Tennis

WILMINGTON, North Carolina – The UNCW men's tennis team shut out former Colonial Athletic Association rival Georgia State, 6-1, to collect its third victory of the new season early Sunday at the UNCW Courts.
 
The Seahawks won their third consecutive match and stand 3-1 in the spring campaign. The Panthers of the Sun Belt Conference dropped to 1-7 after falling for the fourth straight time.
 
UNCW got off to a quick start in Sunday's match, sweeping the No. 2 and No. 3 doubles matches for a 1-0 advantage. The No. 3 tandem of Juan Jose Vargas and Gabe Hurtado trimmed GSU's Edward Tymes and Gabriele Datei, 6-3, to clinch the early point.
 
The Seahawks then won the first three singles matches off the court to nail down the easy win. Alex DeGabriele (No. 6), Gabe Hurtado (No. 4) and Harold Huens (No. 2) each won in straight sets as UNCW cruised to the non-conference win.
 
UNCW returns to action next weekend with a two-match swing to ACC members Clemson (Feb. 25) and Georgia Tech (Feb. 26). The next home match for the Seahawks is Saturday, Mar. 4, vs. Longwood at noon.
