Seahawks Open Woods Era with 78-42 Victory

WILMINGTON, North Carolina -  Head Coach Nicole Woods earned her first career victory as the UNCW women's basketball team opened the 2023-24 campaign with an emphatic 78-42 win against the Apprentice School on Tuesday night at Trask Coliseum.

The Seahawks begin the Woods era with a 1-0 record ahead of a Saturday afternoon road trip to Wofford. The game was an exhibition for the Builders.

UNCW shot 48.1 percent (25-of-52) from the floor while the Apprentice School was limited to a 23 percent showing (14-of-61).

Three different Seahawks found themselves in double-digit scoring led by guard Taylor Henderson's game-high 18 points to go with seven rebounds and five assists. Guard Kylah Silver added 17 points, finishing with a perfect 12-for-12 from the free-throw line. Senior guard Evan Miller had 16 points and shot 7-of-11 from the field.

"Kylah Silver, Taylor Henderson and Evan Miller. Those are going to be three names that you all hear consistently throughout this season," said Woods, following her landmark victory. "We're going to go as those three go, so we wanted to make sure to get them out there and get them with some different combinations.

"To be able to have that win in front of my friends and family and some of the loyal fans that have been here through the thick and then, I got to hug almost all of them and thank them for coming. It's just a surreal feeling, and hopefully, this is one of many to come."

The Seahawks jumped out to a 21-4 advantage with 1:40 left in the first quarter and never looked back. Silver and Henderson combined for 14 of the Seahawks' 22 points in the opening period.
