Jenkins, Rathan-Mayes Give Glimpse For Upcoming Season

Experienced backcourt members gave fans a peek into what they can bring

WILMINGTON, N.C. - KJ Jenkins and Shemar Rathan-Mayes played their first game in a UNCW jersey on Monday night. In the 105-66 win over Mount Olive, both Jenkins and Rathan-Mayes showed off what they will bring to the Seahawks this year.
 
Jenkins, a graduate transfer from New Mexico, showed off his shooting ability with 14 points, including 4-6 from three-point range.
 
"With KJ, his ability to make shots from three, his pull-up is pretty much automatic. He's an elite shooter; I've said that since he arrived on campus. He brings a different element to our group. He's a sniper and something that we needed," said Head Coach Takayo Siddle. "Outside of that, he goes in there and gets rebounds, he dives on the floor, he makes the right play. He competes on the defensive end, so he's a very valuable piece to what we're doing."
 
Seahawks guard Donovan Newby added this about Jenkins, "He brings us a lot of scoring, and he scores at ease, scores at will, and he's another guard that can come take the pressure off. Our team is deep, so if somebody is not hitting tonight, he's going to come in and do what he does at a high level … we've got some really good players on this team, and he's one of them."
 
Rathan-Mayes, the Youngstown State transfer, added eight points of his own, shooting 3-4 from the field. At Youngstown, he averaged 7.4 points per game and averaged 23.3 minutes.
 
"Shemar changed the game with his speed on both ends of the floor. Pushing it on offense, being a pest on defense," said Siddle.
 
"Both of those guys are going to play a huge role in our success," said Siddle.
