Miller's Career Night Propels Seahawks to Overtime Win

ROCK HILL, South Carolina – Senior guard Evan Miller scored 17 of career-high 26 points in the fourth quarter and overtime to propel the UNCW women's basketball team to a thrilling 66-58 overtime victory at Winthrop late Wednesday night at the Winthrop Coliseum.

The Seahawks improved their record to 2-4 this season while Winthrop fell to 4-4.

Senior guard Evan Miller was sensational down the stretch after opening the game with nine points in the first quarter. The Charlotte, N.C., native sank three free throws with 0.9 seconds left in the game to send the game to overtime, where UNCW outscored Winthrop 15-7 to earn the win.

Senior center Lexi Jackson notched her first double-double of the season with a season-highs of 13 points and 14 rebounds while matching her career best six blocks. Redshirt freshman guard Taylor Henderson provided 11 points.

Eagles forward Marissa Gasaway also notched a double-double with 20 points and 16 rebounds. Guard Ronaltha Marc, meanwhile, contributed 19 points.

UNCW opened the game on a 15-2 run and carried a 17-9 advantage after the first quarter by converting 7-of-15 shots in the opening frame. The Seahawks maintained a 21-12 lead with four minutes left in the second quarter before the Eagles trimmed the gap to one point, 21-20, at halftime with an 8-0 over the quarter's final 3:42.

Winthrop flipped the advantage with 11 of the first 14 points in the third quarter to make it 31-24 with 2:42 to go. Three Seahawk free throws by McCall King and Kylah Silver made it 31-27 entering the fourth quarter.

The teams traded baskets for much of the fourth quarter with the Eagles maintaining, at most, a six-point lead when Winthrop guard Jada Ryce sank a pair of free throws to make it 49-45 with under 10 seconds to go.

Miller then scored six points in the final five seconds, including a corner three-pointer and three free throws, to send the game to overtime 51-all. Ryce also made two free throws during Miller's late-game scoring frenzy.

After Winthrop briefly regained the lead to open the extra period, Jackson converted an old-fashioned three-point play and Miller nailed another triple as the Seahawks took the lead for good.

The win marked UNCW's first overtime win since the 2019-20 season and the Seahawks' first overtime victory on the road since 2017,

The Seahawks continue play on the road at defending Big 12 champion Iowa State on Sunday at 2 p.m. EST.
