Seahawks Edge Pride in Freshmen Duel

ELON, North Carolina – The capable freshmen arms of Emily Winstead and Kara Hammock recorded every out of No. 3 seed UNCW's 2-1 rubber match victory over No. 2 Hofstra in Thursday's opening round of the 2022 Colonial Athletic Association Championships at Hunt Softball Park.

The Seahawks, 30-13, move on to face either No. 1 Delaware or No. 4 Elon at 9 a.m. in the winner's bracket on Friday. The Pride, 21-26, will battle No. 5 Charleston in an elimination game Thursday evening.

Winstead, the CAA Pitcher of the Year, tossed 4.2 innings of one-run ball in her postseason debut to earn the win. The 5-8 right-hander struck out eight batters, her 11th game with at least eight punchouts. Hammock pitched the remainder 2.1 innings to record her second career save.

Hofstra freshman starter Haley Venturini went 3.1 innings, allowing two runs while striking out six, in the loss.

The Seahawks struck first to start the game. Sophomore Tayler Vitola walked and then stole second. Senior Janel Gamache followed with a single to Hofstra right fielder Kayla Wilson, who nailed Vitola, who was trying to score, at home. Freshman Mackenzie Amodeo then doubled to left-center that put two on for junior Morgan Britt.

With the count 1-1, Britt shot a single through the left side to plate Gamache and put the Seahawks ahead, 1-0.

Graduate student Anna Knox worked a five-pitch walk with one out in the fourth inning. The Mooresville, N.C., product then swiped second and third. Junior Mary Sobataka executed a squeeze-bunt that scored Knox and added an insurance run for the Seahawks.

The Pride pulled within one when shortstop Meghan Giordano rocketed a home run over the left-field wall to lead off the bottom of the fourth.

Hammock entered in the bottom of the fifth with two runners on and two out. The CAA Rookie of the Year needed one pitch to get out of the inning, inducing a comebacker to the circle to escape the jam unscathed.
