Winstead Sensational As Seahawks Take Series

WILMINGTON, N.C. – Freshman ace Emily Winstead fanned 12 batters as UNCW used a three-run sixth inning to edge past James Madison, 3-1, to take the series at Boseman Field on Sunday afternoon.

The Seahawks, 22-7 (4-2 CAA), are perched near the top of the Colonial Athletic Association standings after beating the Dukes, 15-15 (4-2 CAA), in a series for the first time since 2006. UNCW will look to keep the momentum rolling on the road at Towson next Saturday and Sunday.

Winstead was sensational pitching in back-to-back games for the first time since the season-opening weekend in mid-February. The Bunn, N.C., product struck out seven of the first eight batters on her way to her fourth straight start of six innings or longer.

Both Winstead and JMU's Alissa Humphrey were dealing when Dukes first baseman Hannah Shifflett launched her CAA-leading 12th home run over the left-center wall to break a scoreless tie in the top of the sixth.

Graduate student Anna Knox walked to lead off the bottom of the sixth and then advanced to third on an Arial Pearce single through the left side a batter later.

Senior Logan Bjorson then rocketed a ball to straightaway center that bounced off the glove of JMU centerfielder Isabelle Fishman and allowed Knox and Pearce to score to take the lead.

Junior Mary Sobataka kept the line moving with another single and was followed by freshman Elizabeth Winstead's RBI single into left field that scored a third run.

Freshman Kara Hammock entered in the top of the seventh and closed the game out with a strikeout for the first save of her career.
