UNCW Can't Close Out Series Opener

WILMINGTON, N.C. – Elon's Luke Stephenson tied the game with a home run in the top of the ninth and a bases-loaded wild pitch pushed across the eventual winning run as UNCW fell in extra innings to the Phoenix, 2-1, at Brooks Field on Friday.

The Phoenix improved to 4-9 in the Colonial Athletic Association and 19-21 overall while the Seahawks dropped to 8-5 in the league and 23-17 with their second straight home loss.

Both starters pitched well but did not figure in the decision. Elon's Brian Edgington held UNCW to one run over his 6.2 innings while RJ Sales tossed 7.1 shutout innings for the Seahawks.

Matt Suggs hit his 10th home run for the Seahawks. For Stephenson, it was his ninth.

Ethan Chenault (1-5) took the loss in relief while Ben Simon improved to 2-0 with 2.1 innings of one-hit shutout relief.

How it happened: In the top of the 10th, Chenault hit a batter with one out and Charlie Graatell followed with a double to left. Connor Coolahan earned a walk to load the bases. Anthony Iadisernia struck out, but the pitch wasn't handled, and the go-ahead run scored from third.

Inside the box score: The teams combined to go 0-14 with RISP … Elon had two hits with runners on while the Seahawks were hitless … UNCW pitchers allowed just one leadoff hitter to reach base, that coming in the eighth off Sales.

Home Runs: UNCW – Matt Suggs (10, one out, bases empty in the fifth inning, 364 feet to left, exit velo 102 mph); Elon – Luke Stephenson (9, one out, bases empty in the ninth inning, 370 feet to left, exit velo 98 mph)
