Seahawks Reach CAA Title Match Again

ELON, North Carolina – UNCW's young men's tennis team continued its march to the Colonial Athletic Association Men's Tennis Championship with a 4-1 conquest of No. 3 seeded Delaware on Saturday in the semifinals of the 2022 CAA Men's Tennis Championships at Elon's Jimmy Powell Tennis Center.

The No. 2 seeded Seahawks, 14-8, reached the CAA championship match for the fifth straight time and the 10th time in the last 13 years. The Blue Hens, making their first CAA semifinals appearance, ended their season at 15-9.

Defending champion UNCW will be seeking its eighth CAA crown in 13 years when the Seahawks take on Elon, which became the first No. 4 seed since 2015 to reach the finals of the CAA Men's Tennis Championship after knocking off William & Mary, 4-2.

Sunday's title match, with the CAA's automatic berth to the NCAA Tournament on the line, is slated for 1 p.m.

UNCW started out Saturday's match in a 1-0 hole after losing the doubles point to the Blue Hens, but used superior depth up and down the lineup to beat UD for the fifth straight time in the CAAs.

Trailing 1-0 after doubles play, the Seahawks reeled off four consecutive singles victories to improve to 37-26 lifetime in the CAA Tournament.

Sophomore Gabe Hurtado evened the score at 1-all with a 6-1, 6-4, decision over UD's Alexandre Gluck at No. 4 singles and freshman Harold Huens gave the Seahawks a 2-1 lead after dispatching UD's Tobias Sonne, 6-2, 6-1, at No. 5 singles.

Freshman Trey Mallory then put the Seahawks on top, 3-1, with a 6-3, 6-4, victory over Guilherme Valdoleiros at No. 6 singles, setting up the clincher at No. 3 singles by sophomore Bekhzod Rasamatov, who outlasted Luis Molina, 6-2, 0-6, 6-2.

The Seahawks have now won 13 of their last 14 CAA Tournament matches dating back to 2017.
