NC State Rallies To Down Seahawks, 3-2

RALEIGH, N.C. – NC State left fielder Alaina Smith hit a walk-off home run to hand the Seahawks a 3-2 setback at Dail Stadium on Tuesday evening.

The Wolfpack improved to 22-12 overall this season while the Seahawks fell to 20-6, including an 18-5 mark in non-conference play.

Freshman Emily Winstead fanned seven Wolfpack batters over 6.1 innings of work. The Bunn, N.C., product has authored seven or more strikeouts in six of her last seven appearances.

In the top of the second, right fielder Morgan Britt came around to score on an infield throwing error by the Wolfpack for the Seahawks' first run of the game.

An inning later, senior Janel Gamache laced a one-out double into the left-center gap and moved over to third on a passed ball.

Britt, who walked in her first plate appearance, then strolled to the plate a batter later and roped a triple down the right-field line that was just beyond the diving, outstretched arm of Taylor Johnson of NCSU. Gamache scored on the play to give the Seahawks a 2-0 edge after three innings.

The Wolfpack evened the game in the bottom of the sixth when catcher Sam Sack connected on a two-out, two-run home run after Johnson was hit by an inside pitch.

With one out in the bottom of the seventh, Smith took the first pitch of the at-bat over the center-field wall to complete the comeback.

UNCW continues Colonial Athletic Association play with a three-game set against James Madison this weekend at Boseman Field. The Seahawks and Dukes begin the series with a doubleheader on Saturday, Apr. 2 at noon.
