Seahawks Walk-Off Second Game of Doubleheader

WILMINGTON, N.C. – The UNCW softball team walked off its second game of the day to earn a Wednesday afternoon split against Canisius at Boseman Field.

The Seahawks (9-2) used a late-game rally to win 3-2 in the evening game. The Golden Griffins (4-4) batted around in the second inning of the first game to win, 8-6.

Game 1 | Canisius 8, UNCW 6

The two teams combined for 11 runs in a high-scoring second inning that included a grand slam off the bat of catcher Anna Knox.

The Golden Griffins plated six runs in the top of the second on two doubles and a bases-clearing triple by center fielder Christie McGee-Ross.

The Seahawks loaded the bases for Knox, who launched a 1-0 fastball over the left-field wall to bring the Seahawks within a run, 6-5.

Canisius added two insurance runs on a Sagie Alfaro triple down the left-field line in the top of the fifth to seal the win for the Griffins.

Game 2 | UNCW 3, Canisius 2

The Seahawks walked off the second game of the day when pinch-runner Skylar Stockton scored on a Canisius throwing error in the bottom of the seventh inning.

Vitola scored on a wild pitch in the bottom of the first, the lone blemish for Canisius pitcher Megan Griese through the first five innings.

Canisius tacked on runs in the third and fourth innings to go up 2-1 before freshman Lauryn Richardson tripled home senior Janel Gamache which tied the game entering the seventh inning.

Catcher Jentri Meadows started the final frame off with a single and was then replaced by Stockton on the basepaths.

Center fielder Camryn Dean advanced Stockton to third on a grounder, but an errant throw from Canisius first baseman Lindsi Dennis allowed Stockton to score the game-winning run.

Freshman right-hander Emily Winstead pitched three scoreless innings of relief to earn her second win of the season.

Up next: The teams join NC Central for a weekend tournament at Boseman Field beginning on Friday, Feb. 23. The Seahawks play a doubleheader against the Eagles and Golden Griffins on Friday starting at 4:30 pm.
