Seahawks Notch 17th Win At Homecoming

WILMINGTON, North Carolina – Guards Jaylen Sims and James Baker, Jr., combined for 50 points as Colonial Athletic Association leader UNCW stymied rival Charleston, 85-79, before a sellout crowd in the annual Homecoming game on Saturday night at Trask Coliseum.

The Seahawks increased their record to 10-1 on their home floor and improved to 17-7 overall and 11-2 in the CAA. The Cougars had a three-game winning streak snapped and stand 13-10 and 5-6 in the circuit.

UNCW remains atop the CAA standings by one game, with Towson (10-3), Hofstra (9-4) and Delaware (7-5) trailing the frontrunners.

Sims, from Charlotte, N.C., led all scorers with a season-high 27 points on 8-of-15 from the floor and 8-of-9 at the free throw line. It was his fifth 20+ point performance of the season.

Baker pumped in a career-high 23 points after making 9-of-11 shots and tossing in 4-of-6 at the charity stripe. Junior guard Shykeim Phillips added 14 points and graduate guard Jaylen Fornes finished with 10 for the Seahawks, who shot 54 percent from the floor.

Graduate forward John Meeks paced Charleston in the scoring column with 21 points and added nine rebounds. Junior guard Brenden Tucker collected 13 points and freshman forward Raekwon Horton contributed 11.

"It was a high level battle out there," said Takayo Siddle, UNCW's second-year head coach. "I told the guys it was going to be a 10-round street fight. The guys battled. We won more rounds than they did.

"This was a team win. Guys like Jamari Thomas and Travarien White came in with energy. Our guys responded like champions and I'm proud of them. Our guys battled the whole game, even with adversity. Our crowd was tremendous on a night where we needed them the most."

The Seahawks secured their fourth straight win over Charleston in the series, but it wasn't easy. The Cougars trailed by as many as 14 points with 12 minutes left in the second half before clawing back into the contest down the stretch.

UNCW led by as many as nine points in the first half before settling for a 47-38 advantage at halftime. Sims scored 15 of his total in the opening 20 minutes as the Seahawks shot a robust 60 percent in the first frame.

The Seahawks came out of the dressing room in the second half with a burst and pushed the lead to 14 points, 66-52, when Baker drained only his fifth three-pointer of the season with 12:52 on the clock.

Charleston whittled away at the lead, however, and closed the gap to two points on two occasions. Tucker's second triple on the left wing brought the Cougars within, 74-72, with 4:21 on the clock.

UNCW, behind the nifty play of Phillips, responded with an 8-2 mini-run to get the lead back to 82-74 with one minute left and sealed the win at the free throw line to hand Charleston's Pat Kelsey a loss in his first appearance at Trask Coliseum.

The Seahawks continue their home stand early Monday with a rare weekday afternoon game against visiting William & Mary. Tip-off at Trask Coliseum on Valentine's Day is 2 p.m.
