Cavaliers Turn Back Seahawks, 78-36

CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. – Virginia used a 13-2 second quarter run to build a double-digit halftime lead and outlast UNCW, 78-36, in Sunday afternoon women's basketball action at the John Paul Jones Arena.

The Cavaliers improved their record to 10-0 while the Seahawks dipped to 2-5 overall this year.

Junior guard Carrie Gross and graduate forward Micah Hoggatt each had eight points for the Seahawks, who were held to a season-low 25.4 percent (16-of-63) showing from the field.

Virginia guard McKenna Dale led all scorers with 22 points while collecting six rebounds. The Storrs, Conn., native was joined in double figures by forward London Clarkson (12) and guard Mir McLean for the Cavaliers, who shot 41.3 percent (31-of-75).

The Cavaliers raced out to a 17-4 advantage at the 3:17 mark in the first quarter after scoring 11 unanswered points, including five straight by Clarkson, and ended the opening period up, 19-8.

UNCW, trailing 24-8, cut the deficit to five with a 12-1 spurt over a three-minute second period stretch capped by a Jayde Gamble layup with 4:39 remaining in the second. The Cavaliers then rattled off 13 of the next 15 points before halftime to take a 38-22 lead into the break.

Virginia increased its advantage to 52-22 with the first 10 points of the third period and outscored the Seahawks 20-7 in the quarter to enter the fourth quarter ahead, 58-29.

The Seahawks continue a four-game December road swing at sixth-ranked North Carolina on Wednesday at 6 p.m.

GAME NOTES: It was the first meeting between the two schools … It was UNCW's first appearances inside the John Paul Jones Arena … The Seahawks are 3-29 vs. the Atlantic Coast Conference … UNCW was 1-of-13 from three-point range … The Seahawks were held to single-digit points in three quarters … There were 92 rebounds in the game … Attendance was 3,221.
