Seahawks Drop Non-Conference Finale

WILMINGTON, North Carolina – Norfolk State outscored UNCW 18-8 in the fourth quarter to hand the Seahawks a 42-38 setback in women's basketball action on Friday afternoon at Trask Coliseum.

The Spartans improved to 11-3 overall with their third road win of the season. UNCW concluded its non-conference slate with a 3-8 record and opens Colonial Athletic Association play next Thursday, Dec. 29, vs. Drexel at 7 p.m.

Graduate guard Carrie Gross (12 points) led the Seahawks, who shot 33.3 percent (15-of-45), in scoring for the sixth time this year. Graduate forward Micah Hoggatt and junior guard Britany Range each hauled in 10 rebounds with the mark being a career-high for Range.

NSU forward Kierra Wheeler delivered nine of her game-high 15 points after halftime. Every Spartan starter contributed at least six points.

UNCW, trailing 14-9 after the first quarter, limited NSU to a 1-for-12 showing from the floor in the second quarter to enter halftime ahead 23-18 after opening the period with a 12-2 run.

The Seahawks never trailed in a low-scoring third to enter the fourth in front 30-24. The Spartans put their foot on the gas with nine of the first 11 points in the final period to take a 33-23 lead with 5:48 to go.

The teams traded the advantage twice over the next two minutes before NSU claimed it for good with a Niya Fields three-pointer with 3:03 to go.

GAME NOTES: The Spartans won their second straight game against the Seahawks … UNCW committed 20 turnovers … There were seven lead changes … UNCW played at home for the first time in 22 days … Range played a career-high 40 minutes … Asia Henderson produced a season-high eight points off the bench … Attendance was 592.
