Coastal Carolina Breaks Away from Seahawks

CONWAY, South Carolina – Coastal Carolina forward Aja Blount scored 13 of her game-high 19 points in the third quarter as the Chanticleers turned back UNCW 68-53 in women's basketball action on Sunday afternoon at the HTC Center.

Coastal (5-5) improved its home record to a perfect 5-0 in 2022-23. The Seahawks (2-7) suffered their third straight December setback.

Blount was joined in double figures by redshirt freshman guard Anaya Barney (13) and center Miriam Recarte (12) for the Chants, who shot 33.9 percent (19-of-56) from the field.

Graduate guard Carrie Gross led UNCW, who converted at a 33.3 percent (18-of-54) clip, with 17 points. Junior forward Lexi Jackson delivered her second consecutive double-double with 13 points and career-high 12 rebounds.

The Seahawks led all but 55 seconds of the first two quarters to enter halftime in front, 26-24. Coastal, however, dominated the final two periods by a 44-27 margin to claim its third straight win.

The Chants opened with a Blount bucket in the game's first minute, but UNCW rattled off 12 of the next 15 points to take a 9-5 advantage with 5:12 to go in the opening period. The Seahawks limited Coastal to a 3-of-16 showing in the first 10 minutes to carry a 17-11 lead into the second period.

A back-and-forth second quarter kept the Chants within six points and allowed Coastal to cut the deficit to two points with three free throws in the final minute before the intermission.

Blount opened with the Chants' first nine points of the third quarter, including five straight free throws, to take a 33-29 lead at the 7:19 mark. The teams traded baskets the remainder of the period to provide Coastal a 44-38 cushion entering the fourth period.

The Chants outscored the Seahawks 24-15 in the final period as the advantage swelled as high as 18 for Coastal, 64-46, on a Recarte three-pointer with 2:33 remaining.

The Seahawks next travel to Cherokee, N.C. to participate in the Cherokee Invitational Showcase against Western Carolina on Dec. 21 at 7:30 p.m. The game will take place at Harrah's Cherokee Casino Resort.
