Seahawks Wallop Wasps In Exhibition

WILMINGTON, North Carolina – Senior guard Maleeck Harden-Hayes and sophomore guard Trazarien White poured in 16 points apiece as UNCW cruised to an 88-47 victory vs. Division II Emory & Henry in a men's basketball exhibition game on Wednesday night at Trask Coliseum.

The Seahawks open the regular season late Monday with a 9 p.m. date against preseason No. 1 North Carolina at the Dean E. Smith Center in Chapel Hill.

Joining Harden-Hayes and White in double figures was sophomore guard Jamarii Thomas with 15 points. The Greensboro, N.C., product also racked up a team-high six rebounds and four assists for the Seahawks, who shot 45.1 percent (32-of-71) from the field.

The Wasps, limited to 32.6 percent (14-of-43) from the floor, were paced by sophomore wing Gabe Brown's 13 points in 19 minutes of action.

"There were some jitters out there," said UNCW Head Coach Takayo Siddle, the 2022 Colonial Athletic Association Coach of the Year. "We were a little nervous and anxious. We did some good things for the last eight minutes of the first half.

"The guys played very hard throughout the game. I challenged them in certain areas. I'm proud of the guys. I think our depth could be one of our strong suits. I'm excited about this team. I think we have a ton of upside."

The Seahawks, who won the 2022 College Basketball Invitational championship, are now 49-6 in exhibition tilts since the contests were recorded in 1985-86. UNCW has won 32 of its last 33 preseason contests.

In Wednesday's tune-up, the Wasps hung around early before the Seahawks used a late first-half spurt to sprint ahead. The Seahawks outscored the Wasps, 26-4, over the last 7:25 of the opening period to jump out front, 47-25, at the break.

In the second half, the Seahawks poured it on, scoring 17 unanswered points as part of a 21-1 run that extended the lead to 42 points, 76-34, with 6:31 remaining. The scoring parade featured seven consecutive markers by Harden-Hayes.

Siddle emptied his bench down the stretch, deploying guards Makao Surigao, Nick Farrar and Riley Berkoff as UNCW traded baskets with E&H on its way to a convincing 88-47 final in its last tune-up of the preseason.

After a transition slam by Brown brought E&H within 23-11, in the first period, the Seahawks reeled off 14 unanswered points to build a double-digit lead.

Thomas scored six straight points in the rally and White's bucket in the paint gave the Seahawks a 35-21 cushion at the 3:45 mark. The lead ballooned to 20 points, 43-23, on a pair of free throws by Thomas with 1:31 to go before White's basket with three seconds left in the half gave the Seahawks a 22-point bulge at intermission.
