Seahawks Earn No. 2 Seed in CAA Championships

WILMINGTON, North Carolina – The UNCW men's soccer team played Elon to a scoreless draw in the regular season finale that determined the Colonial Athletic Association regular season champion on Saturday night at UNCW Soccer Stadium.

The Phoenix, 10-3-3 (6-1-2 CAA), claimed their second CAA regular season crown with the tie as well as a bye and home-field advantage throughout the CAA Championship.

The Seahawks, 6-3-7 (5-1-3 CAA), earned the no. 2 seed in the conference tournament and receive the other bye to the semifinals. UNCW will host the CAA Quarterfinal match between third-seeded Hofstra and sixth-seeded William & Mary on Thursday and then play the winner next Sunday at 2 p.m. at home.

UNCW recorded nine shots, including eight in the first half, as it went for the CAA title before a season-high crowd of 1,165, the second straight game the Seahawks have set an attendance high this year.

Senior forward Jalen Anderson collected five shots with one on goal. The Camden, N.C., native, who was one of eight Seahawks honored on Senior Night, has fashioned at least three shots in four straight games.

Both goalkeepers – UNCW's Gabriel Perrotta and Elon's Ryan Bilichuk – notched two saves, but none may have been bigger than Perrotta's sliding stop to halt Scott Vatne's breakaway attack and preserve his 28th career shutout.

Perrotta headed a Seahawk defense that limited Elon to a season-low four shots, including one in the first 84 minutes of action.

GAME NOTES: UNCW extended its program-high ties in a season to seven … The Seahawks are unbeaten in five straight games … Eight Seahawks played the full game … Both teams deployed 14 players …  UNCW has made a record 27 CAA Championships … The Seahawks will host part of the CAA Tournament for the first time since 2019 … Elon's Mason Duvall had three shots … UNCW held a 9-3 advantage in corner kicks.
