PHILADELPHIA, Pennsylvania – Drexel scored a pair of goals in the second half to outlast UNCW for a 2-0 victory in the Colonial Athletic Association men's soccer opener for both teams at Vidas Field on Saturday afternoon.
The verdict allowed the Dragons to improve to 2-3-0 overall and 1-0-0 in the CAA while ending the Seahawks' three-game win streak to begin the season.
After a scoreless first half, Drexel took a 1-0 lead in the 71st minute. Senior forward
Chris Donovan attempted a penalty kick that was stopped by junior goalkeeper
Gabriel Perrotta, but the Dragons were awarded a second attempt as the officials ruled Perrotta moved off the goal line early.
Graduate student midfielder
Daniel Nesseler converted the ensuing try with a blast to the upper right corner for his third goal of the season.
Donovan upped the margin to 2-0 with 2:06 remaining when he scored an unassisted goal after a failed clearing attempt by the Seahawks.
Perrotta made seven saves in the loss for UNCW, which was outshot by a 21-7 margin. Redshirt senior
Cameron Sanders tallied three saves in the win for Drexel.
UNCW begins a two-game homestand on Tuesday, Sept. 14, when the Seahawks host Charlotte for a 7 p.m. non-conference contest. Drexel continues its CAA schedule at Hofstra on Saturday, Sept. 18, at 4 p.m.
