WILMINGTON, North Carolina – UNCW got off to a quick start in its exhibition opener against North Carolina, but the Tar Heels responded with three unanswered goals to claim a 3-1 victory over the Seahawks at UNCW Soccer Stadium on Monday evening.
Freshman forward
Kayla Burroughs wasted little time making an impact in her first appearance as a Seahawk. The Asheboro, N.C., native gave the Seahawks a 1-0 lead in the fourth minute when she stole the ball away from a Tar Heel player and made a long run before depositing a shot inside the near post.
But, North Carolina answered in the 18th minute on an unassisted goal by freshman midfielder
Emily Colton.
The Tar Heels claimed the lead with two goals in a nine-minute span early in the second half. Freshman forward
Emily Murphy took advantage of a UNCW turnover and scored on a breakaway just under 11 minutes into the second half before an unassisted goal from sophomore forward
Emily Moxley upped the margin to 3-1 in the 65th minute.
Sophomore goalkeeper
Blair Barefoot made six saves in the first half for the Seahawks, while freshman
Kaylie Bierman tallied two stops after the intermission.
The Seahawks close out exhibition play on Saturday, Aug. 14, with a contest at East Carolina with kick-off slated for noon.
