WILMINGTON, North Carolina – The term rebound is something most people would associate with the sport of basketball. But, Sunday night's women's soccer game between UNCG and UNCW certainly could provide a case for using it in other sports.
After falling behind in the second minute, UNCW rebounded with a pair of goals to close the first half before holding on for a 2-1 victory over the Spartans at the UNCW Soccer Stadium.
The Seahawks, who won their second game in a row, improved to 2-1-0 on the season. UNCG, meanwhile, suffered its first loss of the year and fell to 1-1-2.
UNCG wasted very little time in gaining the early lead. After junior forward
Maddy Gilhool had her shot attempt stopped by freshman goalkeeper
Kaylie Bierman, senior forward
Nicole Souply followed up with an attempt that found the back of the net just 81 seconds into the game.
However, UNCW evened the score with 10:24 remaining in the opening stanza. Freshman forward
Kayla Burroughs sent a crossing pass into the penalty area, which found junior forward
Jordan Faveri. The Guelph, Ontario, Canada, product collected the pass and slipped a shot inside the near post for her second goal in as many games.
Just under six minutes later, the Seahawks claimed the one-goal advantage when sophomore midfielder
Madison Henry knocked in a rebound of a shot by redshirt sophomore
Hannah Arostegui for the eventual game-winning marker past senior goalkeeper
Aiyanah Tyler-Cooper.
Bierman and the UNCW defense limited the Spartans to just one shot in the second half, securing the Seahawks' first home victory of the season.
Bierman tallied four saves in the victory for the Seahawks, who held a 12-7 advantage in shots and an 8-1 edge in corner kicks. Tyler-Cooper posted six saves in a losing effort for UNCG.
The Seahawks return to action next Sunday, Sept. 5, with a 6 p.m. non-conference contest at Coastal Carolina. UNCG entertains NC State on Thursday, Sept. 2, at 7 p.m. to open a three-game homestand.
