Women's Hoops Adds Transfer Trio

WILMINGTON, North Carolina – The 2021-22 UNCW women's basketball roster continues to take shape as Coach Karen Barefoot has added a trio of transfer student-athletes, including redshirt senior center Asia Henderson, graduate student guard Sierra DaCosta and sophomore guard Britany Range.

Henderson joins the Seahawks after spending the last three seasons at Wichita State while DaCosta makes the short trip to the Port City after playing at East Carolina last year. Range continues her career at UNCW after playing at Seton Hall last season.

"Sierra, Asia and Britany are fantastic additions to our Seahawk family," said Barefoot, the Seahawks' fifth-year bench boss. "Not only are they very talented on the court, but they also embody the values of our program and UNCW. They will also add a veteran presence to our team heading into the season."

A 6-3 center from Hope Mills, N.C., Henderson played in 50 games over the last three seasons at Wichita State. She appeared in 30 games during her redshirt sophomore campaign and averaged 4.4 points and 4.0 rebounds per game, while leading the Shockers with 26 blocked shots.

During her redshirt freshman season, Henderson saw action in 20 contests and served as the secretary for Wichita State's SAAC Leadership Council. She was also a member of the American Athletic Conference's All-Academic Team.

"We are super excited to have Asia join our program," Barefoot said. "She already has three years of college playing experience from her time at Wichita State. She will add strength, length and athleticism to our front court which will work well in our system.

"Asia also comes from a basketball family. Her mother played basketball at UNC Pembroke and has helped to mold her into the player she is today. I am excited to have Asia playing closer to home and her family."

DaCosta, a Philadelphia, Pa., native, spent the 2020-21 season at East Carolina after three years at Hartford. The 5-9 guard ranked fourth on the team with a 9.2 scoring average while starting 19-of-20 games. She reached double figures in scoring 10 times, including a season-high 25 points in the season opener against Towson.

In three seasons at Hartford, DaCosta appeared in 80 games with 56 starts. She tallied 905 points for the Hawks while contributing 244 rebounds. She earned America East Conference Rookie of the Year plaudits in 2016-17 after averaging 11.3 points and 3.3 rebounds per game.

"I am excited for Sierra to join our program," Barefoot said. "She is a tough combo guard who can score at all three levels. She has the potential to be one of the top guards in our league. Her strength, athleticism and playmaking ability will fit into our system perfectly."

Range, a 5-10 guard from Middleburg, Fla., appeared in five games at Seton Hall as a freshman and grabbed a rebound against Xavier. A four-year letter winner at Middleburg High School, she earned All-Conference and All-County honors three times and led the Broncos to an 83-28 record during her career.

Named as the Region 1 District 5A Player of the Year during her senior campaign, Range averaged 19.9 points, 8.6 rebounds and 4.4 assists per game.

According to Barefoot, "Britany is a young guard with a high ceiling. She also has the ability to score the ball at all three levels. She brings a scoring mentality and will be consistent three-point threat for us. I am excited for Britany's future on and off the court here at UNCW."

Henderson, DaCosta and Range join seven other student-athletes to form the Seahawks' incoming class, which joins a group of six returning letter winners from last year's squad.
