Track Teams Make Road Debut

WILMINGTON, North Carolina – For the first time in the 2021 season, the UNCW men's and women's track & field teams will be on the road as they travel to the University of Mount Olive for the Trojan Challenge on Friday and Saturday (March 26-27).

The meet, held at the Ray McDonald Sr. Sports Complex, will begin Friday afternoon with the Men's Hammer Throw at 1 p.m. There is a full slate of events scheduled for Saturday, starting at 10 a.m. with the Men's Javelin Throw. No spectators will be allowed due to COVID-19 protocols.

The teams participating in the meet are Mount Olive, UNCW, Barton, Francis Marion, Grand Valley State, Lincoln (Pa.), Louisburg, Meredith, Methodist, Morehead St., NC Wesleyan, Sandhills CC, SCAD Savannah, Shaw, UNC Pembroke, Virginia State, William Peace, and Winston Salem State.

It will be the Seahawks' first road meet of the season after playing host for their first three meets, including the Wendy's Seahawk Navy and Teal Invitationals on March 12-13, where the Seahawks earned 12 first place finishes.

"It's important that we continue to improve to show the hard work that we've been putting in," said UNCW Head Coach Jeff Klaves. "This comes with a caveat that improvements aren't always shown in times or distances. When we leave the meet, the ability to reflect and know that we're pushing the mark is everything we need."

Klaves, in his second year at UNCW, has placed an emphasis on improvement. The Seahawks had three student-athletes recognized after the first week of the outdoor season - junior Jonathan Lloyd (Men's Field Athlete of the Week), sophomore Josh Parks (Men's Track Athlete of the Week), and freshman Sarah Leach (Women's Track Athlete of the Week).

"The team is young and we're figuring out how to be elite and how to compete. We don't exactly have one star athlete. We're looking for athletes to emerge and we want success to be contagious. Success breeds success."

Following this weekend's meet, the Seahawks travel to East Carolina next Saturday for the Bill Carson Invitational.
