Hoggatt Paces Seahawks in Loss at Norfolk State

NORFOLK, Virginia – Redshirt senior forward Micah Hoggatt scored 12 points and matched her career high with eight rebounds, but it was not enough as UNCW dropped a 67-56 decision against Norfolk State in non-conference women's basketball action at Echols Hall on Thursday evening.
 
The Seahawks, playing their first game after a 15-day exam break, dropped to 2-6 on the season while Norfolk State stands 4-6 following its second win in the last three games.
 
Hoggatt authored her third double-digit scoring effort of the season after knocking down 6-of-11 field goal attempts, while graduate student guard Sierra DaCosta tallied a team-high 13 points.
 
Senior guard Camille Downs led Norfolk State to the victory with her second double-double of the season. The Fredericksburg, Va., product netted a career-high 22 points and grabbed 10 rebounds while adding four steals.
 
Junior guard Deja Francis added 18 points on 8-of-11 shooting for the Spartans, who earned their first-ever win over the Seahawks.
 
Key Moment: The Spartans, who never trailed in the game, made five of their first six field goal attempts to build an 11-2 lead in the game's opening three minutes. Downs led the charge by netting five of her 10 points in the opening period.   
 
Game Notes:
  • Norfolk State earned its first win in six all-time meetings against UNCW.
  • The Seahawks now stand 1-4 on the road this season.
  • Senior guard Rinnah Green set a career high with nine points after shooting 2-for-4 from the field in addition to a 4-of-6 showing at the free throw line.
  • Norfolk State outrebounded UNCW by a 38-22 margin … Each team had 10 offensive rebounds.
  • Freshman guard Jayde Gamble registered a season-high three steals, giving her seven thefts in the last three games.
  • UNCW has posted 10 or more steals in each of the last three games after registering 10 steals against Norfolk State.
  • Senior guard Carrie Gross has hit 14 consecutive free throws after going 2-for-2 at the line against the Spartans. 
Up Next: UNCW makes a brief return home on Sunday, Dec. 19, to welcome East Carolina to Trask Coliseum for a 2 p.m. non-conference game. Fans are encouraged to wear their Ugly Sweaters to the game and Seahawk Sports Marketing will hold its Shoes for Socks promotion.
