Late Goal Lifts Northeastern Over Seahawks, 1-0

ELON, North Carolina – Graduate student forward Kayla McCauley scored the game-winning goal with 2:42 remaining as Northeastern outlasted UNCW, 1-0, in the first semifinal of the Colonial Athletic Association Women's Soccer Championship at Elon University's Rudd Field on Thursday afternoon.

The win elevated the fourth-seeded Huskies' record to 9-8-1 while UNCW, the regular season champion, fell to 11-4-1 on the season.

McCauley gave Northeastern a berth in the title game when she scored her first goal of the season. Freshman forward Megan Putvinski sent a ball from just outside the penalty area to junior forward Nina Dooley. Dooley slipped a pass to the far side to McCauley, whose shot was deflected off a UNCW defender and past sophomore goalkeeper Blair Barefoot.

Barefoot and freshman goalkeeper Kaylie Bierman combined to make three saves in the loss for the Seahawks, who were outshot by an 8-6 margin.

Junior goalkeeper Angeline Friel registered three saves for the Huskies, who advance to face either Hofstra or James Madison in the CAA Championship Game on Sunday, Nov. 7, at 1 p.m.
